What is in a degree?

Today I had a very interesting experience. In dealing with a customer
service issue at work I had a woman state to me, apparently as
evidence of her intelligence, that she had a PhD in molecular biology.
Within 30 seconds of this statement, I directed her to our blog where
she could find the answer to her question. Her response... "What is a
blog?"

My opinion is this: "what is twitter" is not necessarily a reflection,
yet, on a person's education level. But not knowing "blog" is. And a
telling moment for myself was that her ignorance to "blog" spoke
louder to me than did her announcing her PhD.

To me, it tells of an education that stopped on graduation day. To not
utilize the greatest learning resource ever invented, the internet, or
so little that you are unaware of "blogs" is proof of classroom
scholar when lifelong scholarship should be the esteemed benchmark.

On a side note, this was my first blog post written entirely on my
mobile device. It is crazy how powerful our phones have become.

hybrid

“A recent analysis of existing online-learning research by the U.S. Department of Education revealed that students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction. What’s more, students who took the class using a “blended,” or hybrid, model of instruction performed best of all.”

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the people to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders.  Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." -Antoine De Saint-Exupery, Author of The Little Prince

Supply and Demand

Until traditional colleges can find a way of scaling (catching supply up with demand) without diluting the product (degree inflation) tuition at traditional colleges will continue to escalate. I was just reminded of this truth in reading an article focused on the new legislation for nurses getting their Bachelors.

The University of Phoenix, which enrolls 6,675 students in its R.N. to B.S.N. program, says it does not feel at all threatened by its new nonprofit competitors. Supply is so out of proportion with demand that everyone stands to grow, says Angie Strawn, associate dean of the university’s nursing school.

JD in EDU

Chicago just named a lawyer as their Board of Education chief. I like seeing edu pull in leaders from other sectors.
